The calculator compares the two dates field by field. Days: 7 − 15 doesn't work, so it borrows the length of the previous month (September has 30 days): 7 + 30 − 15 = 22 days, and the borrowed month reduces the month count by one. Months: October (10) − March (3) = 7, minus the borrowed month = 6 months. Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36 years.

Result: 36 years, 6 months, 22 days — which is also 438 total months, 13,355 total days, 1,907 total weeks, 320,520 hours, or 19,231,200 minutes. Try the same dates above to see it.

Why the Borrowing Step Matters

Months don't have a fixed length — they run from 28 to 31 days — so a simple subtraction of dates isn't enough. When the end day is smaller than the birth day, the calculator borrows the exact number of days in the month before the end date (30 for September in the example above, but 28 or 29 if the previous month is February). Leap years follow the standard calendar rule: a year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 wasn't. Total days are counted on the real calendar, so every February 29 in the span is included automatically.

Inclusive vs Exclusive Counting

Age normally counts completed time: on the morning of your birthday you have finished the previous year, not started counting the next one twice. The day totals here measure the difference between the two dates, so the start date itself isn't counted. If a form or tradition asks you to count both the first and last day (inclusive counting), add one day to the total-days figure.

Where People Use This

Age cut-offs for school enrolment and sports leagues, eligibility dates for voting, driving, retirement and benefits, "age as of" fields on official forms, and milestones like your 10,000th day alive. In each case the as-of date matters: someone can be eligible on 1 September and not on 31 August, which is why the "Age at Date" field exists.

Limitations

This calculator works with dates, not times: it doesn't ask what time of day you were born, so the hours and minutes figures are whole-day conversions (total days × 24 × 60) rather than a countdown to the exact minute of birth. Time zones aren't considered, and results use the Gregorian calendar, which is standard for modern dates. For legal or medical purposes, the document or authority asking for your age decides which as-of date and counting rule applies.
